Trust Yourself and Enjoy Each Moment as a Parent

Friday, February 12, 2010

My friend Sarah sent me article by Anna Quindlen, the Pulitzer prize winning journalist and bestselling author.  As well as being a reassuring message to those of us who still question our ability with "Am I doing it right?" or "Is there something wrong?" it reminds us that as parents, it's especially important to enjoy each moment with our children.  As Sarah said in the accompanying note to the essay, "carpe diem".   Read More

Thanks Amanda
I needed to read this this morning - just like little Miss Neat I feel overwhelmed sometimes picking up after 3 sons and a husband. I've learned to step back a little and avoid walking into rooms sometimes to avoid the frustration I feel at having to clean up yet again. It's so true though about being thankful for it - I'm grateful for a full, busy home - and I wouldn't be without any of them - I need to take them as they are - mess included. Thanks for the reminder Amanda

Housework Overhwhelm: How to avoid becoming Little Miss Neat

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

My mother has a magnet on her fridge and it says something along the lines of “Tidy houses are for dull women”. I disagree – tidy houses are for perfectionist women who think they need to be in control – women like me. I’m not dull, but I do have a certain manic quality when it comes to wanting tidy surroundings. I find an absolute sense of calm when my surroundings are neat, tidy, serene, pleasing to the eye.  As I sit here, the house isn’t as tidy as I’d like it to be, and I tend to  pick things up, tidy as I pass.  However, this is very frustrating as it never ends!  And living as the only woman in an all male household, I’m constantly flabbergasted at a certain selective vision that I’ve noticed over the years.  Read More

This is brilliant Amanda! It really hit home: I thought I was the only who 'tested' my family to see if it was actually only me who picked stuff up. And, I'd like to report that - yes, it is.

My husband once went to do a bit of shopping as requested by me. Just a bag full of dry goods, so not much. When he got home he put it on the chair in the kitchen - and there it remained. So, I thought, is he going to put it away...or is he assuming I'm going to do it? And so I left it. Four days later, he asked "are you going to put that shopping away?". WHY ME??!!! He knows where the tea bags go!

So, most of the time, I mutter under my breath. But, yes, at least I can be thankful for a roof over my head and things to clear up in the first place.

Hi Amanda

I hope you’re well!

I think you wrote this especially for me  I drive myself in sane trying to keep a tidy house and the coat hanger on the stairs
Made me smile, i have also tried that one however I didn’t get to two days possibly not even two hours.

I will forward this to all my “neat” friends.

Take care
Karen
